10. White Coal Kilns

Associated with the Green’s Mill lead smelting site are three white coal kilns used to dry out wood for fuel, located in coppiced woodland areas and built in the last half of the 17th or early 18th century. This kiln is in woodland east of the mill located in a circular hollow cut into the hill-side with a well preserved dry-stone lined wall, and its access facing west down the slope. Investigations revealed evidence of charcoal, coal, coke and signs of relatively intense heat.

Return to the gate, turn left to re-join the track and head right to a boundary wall corner and gate; in the paddock over the gate are two linear ridges along the contours of the field, one which is overlaid with stones and boulders.
