10. Site of Railway.

Site of Railway.                        Windmill End railway halt in 1957.

The Dudley to Old Hill railway opened in 1878 and crossed over the canal ahead by a long iron girder bridge to the site of Windmill End station; the bridge has been removed although the abutments are visible, particularly from the canal towpaths. In the opposite direction the railway passed through a cutting and tunnel to Baptist End and its station halt, on the way to Dudley. As part of the ‘Beeching’ railway cuts passenger services were terminated in June 1964, freight facilities ceased in March 1968, and the tracks and bridges were removed by July 1969.

Walk ahead to the junction with a grit track and turn right, and then bear left around the wide path to see a wooden water culvert at ground level to the left, beyond which is a pool with an island.
