6. Greens Mill

Here are the remains of an ore hearth lead smelting mill which produced lead from lead ore, and to the right are the remains of a square western building with a rubble-filled pit / cellar, above a small revetted wall to the right of the descending track. The dam and millpond are up to the left of the path, and an oval-shaped terrace is visible to the right further down the track; the mill was recorded as existing by 1665 and was refurbished as a paper mill in 1793, producing coarse brown wrapping paper. Production ceased in 1887 and the 2-storey mill closed in 1888. The mill pond is retained by a near-vertical, high dry-stone revetted dam wall, with a recess for an overshot wheel, whilst the mill site comprises the footings and ruins of buildings in a yard with a large rectangular eastern building parallel to the stream.

Follow the track through the mill yard bearing right to Hood Brook.
