On the opposite side of the canal there is an opening into a wide canal basin, where boats would fill up with cargoes such as coal, coke, and breeze; to the left were ovens for burning coal into coke and breeze, used to fuel furnaces for making iron. A long inclined tramway carried coal down from a pit up the hillside to the loading wharf at the basin.
Continue along the towpath for 120m. to the bridge.
