10b. Toll Island.

Option 3 is an extension to the main trail. Bear right in front of Windmill End Junction bridge to join the towpath, which is fairly level and wide, and continue for 150 m. to an island in the canal.

This is a long narrow brick-built island, and on the towpath side was a small building; which is where the toll collector recorded canal boats and weighed their loads by measuring their depth in the water. Depending on the cargo carried it was possible to calculate the amount of money payable to the canal company.

Continue along the towpath for 120 m.
