4. Lime Kiln

This is a circular farm lime-kiln, which is dry-stone lined and has an open loading point at the top; the kiln is retained on the down-slope side by the stone walling, and at the centre is a short tunnel, with side walls which narrow upwards and lead to a small stoking / emptying hole. They were commonly built in the region but this is a rarity since it is the first recorded on the eastern grit-stone upland. Lime was produced as a fertilizer for the relatively poor-quality land.

Follow a winding track SE downhill, bearing right and then left, towards the bottom corner of the field and a dry-stone wall, to the left of some trees. Follow the wall on the left side around to a pair of stone gate posts, and cross the stile to a stone wall on the right with the stream below; pass through the gate ahead into a yard.
